Joint Forum of Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance and DGNB

Press release /

From November 7-10, 2017 the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance and the German Sustainable Building Council DGNB e.V. will be presenting a joint forum in keeping with the motto »Better Building – Better Life« on the occasion of the FENESTRATION BAU China trade fair at Shanghai. The forum will last for several days and include a lecture program and a special show presenting selected exhibits. Further well-committed partners are the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (The German Society for International Cooperation - GIZ), SBA Architects and the RBI Software AG.

An extensive lecture program directly at the booth promotes knowledge transfer between the two countries Germany and China.

Over the past three years, both Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance and DGNB already made a joint appearance, previously sharing a stand at the BAU Congress China in Beijing. From 2017, this event – which is being organized by a subsidy of Messe München – evolves into FENESTRATION BAU China, the leading international trade fair for windows, doors, rooflights and facades, technology, components as well as prefabricated units and construction materials. FENESTRATION BAU China will hold exhibitions in Beijing in even year and Shanghai in odd year. This year's venue is at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Center (SNIEC). Once again, the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance and the German Sustainable Building Council DGNB are participating as official partners of the trade fair.

The content of the Forum is governed by its motto »Better Building – Better Life«. An essential element is constituted by the joint special show presented at stand 302 in hall N2, which will be officially opened on November 7 at 11 a.m. The exhibits will feature a patented Chilled Water Wall for cooling and dehumidifying indoor spaces along with a series of research studies conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP, which focus on the development of construction materials based on recycled and regenerative raw materials. In conjunction with the RIB AG and the CG Group, the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance will present a digital, BIM-based 7D-building model. In addition, SBA Architects will introduce an urban planning model featuring three projects that were developed on the basis of BIM.

The first three days of the trade fair will feature an extensive lecture program

The lecture program of the first trade fair day (2 p.m. through 5.30 p.m., room N2-M42) is entitled »Sustainable, Energy-Efficient and Healthy Buildings and Urban Districts«. Numerous German and Chinese experts will discuss current challenges and leverages for enhancing the role of sustainable construction in practice (moderation: GIZ). Here, the focus is particularly on the knowledge transfer among experts from both countries. Mr. Gunther Adler, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety will attend this discussion. Simultaneous translation (English and Chinese) will be provided for all lectures.

On November 8 and 9, trade fair visitors will be given the opportunity of listening to a comprehensive lecture program directly at the stand. Some of the manifold contributions addressing the topics »Sustainable Building for China«, »Designing Future Cities«, and »Digital Solutions for Building Innovation« will be presented in English, some in Chinese. In this context, current research results and innovations are going to be presented. On the third day of the trade fair, a Networking Event will take place at the stand, beginning at 3.30 p.m.

Joint commitment focusing on individual issues

Particularly for one of the aspects addressed at the forum, the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance sees a lot of potential, as managing director Thomas Kirmayer underlines: »Digitalization will change the international construction industry by changing many processes, technologies and working methods. Regarding the rapid development cycles, this is especially true in China. The success of this transformation is closely coupled to consistently aligning the solutions that are to be developed along the value added chains. Further, in-depth understanding of the relevant processes is deemed to be decisive, in conjunction with a significantly more intense degree of communication and collaboration compared to today's levels. In cooperation with our trade fair partners, we show how this can be done.«

»In the last few years, China has experienced a re-evaluation regarding the quality of the built environment, which is now centered around sustainability«, says Johannes Kreissig, CEO of the DGNB GmbH. »The customers' interest in the topics and tools of the German Sustainable Building Council DGNB is constantly growing – last, but not least because our lifecycle-oriented and holistic approach in certification is convincing. At the trade fair, DGNB experts will inform visitors about practical applications for the Chinese market. This is why we appreciate the Forum we share with the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance as a valuable platform.«

Exhibits in the scope of the special show

Resource preservation and high-quality recycling of construction materials

The Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP presents research projects that focus on developing construction materials from recycled or renewable raw materials, which are distinguished by an improved carbon footprint compared to conventional building materials. Further product developments include resistant construction materials made from renewable raw materials, particularly products based on typha plants. These mold-resistant building materials feature low-energy production, a high load-bearing capacity and a good insulating capacity.

Innovative air-conditioning

The Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP presents its Chilled Water Wall, a patented technology that allows comfortably cooling and dehumidifying indoor environments using a chilled water film.

Digital 7D-building models

Together with its partners RIB AG and CG Group, the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance presents the diverse application areas and dimensions of digital building models. Based on the 3D-BIM (Building Information Modeling) plan, RIB AG's 5D-BIM tool iTwo demonstrates the intelligent combination of three-dimensional construction components and cost and time attributes. The Fraunhofer IBP adds further dimensions for simulating the utilization phase (6D) and coupled information on environmental impacts and sustainability (7D).

Urban planning in a digitized world

SBA Architects will present their latest designs, illustrating which changes will be promoted by digitizing urban planning processes and how these changes will affect the way in which planners think and operate.
