Profile of the institute

© Fraunhofer ISE

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is engaged in establishing a sustainable, economic, secure and socially fair energy supply system. To realize this, the institute develops materials, components, systems and methods. Activities comprise the research of scientific fundaments of solar energy use, the development of production techniques and prototypes as well as the execution of demonstration facilities, testing and certifying of products. A main business area is buildings and the technical equipment of buildings besides other main research in the field of photovoltaic, optics and hydrogen technology.

Within the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance the ISE is particularly responsible for

  • zero energy building
  • energy concepts for buildings
  • façade systems
  • energy efficient systems for heating and cooling
  • solar cooling
  • sorption technology
  • solar electricity supply
  • use of daylight
  • energy monitoring
  • optimization of operation
  • testing technology for solar thermal energy and photovoltaic
