The Fraunhofer Institute for Environment, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT develops and optimizes methods of environment, process, material and energy engineering aimed at enhancing sustainable economic activities, environmentally compatible technologies and innovative behavior. Topics such as »Bio-refinery – products made of renewable resources«, »matfunc – functional particles, materials and membranes«, »Modular energy technologies – flexible solutions for sustainable energy systems« and »Information networking for process and energy engineering – use of shared knowledge in value chains« position the institute on the European research level.

Within the Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance the UMSICHT is particularly responsible for

  • self-repairing sealing systems
  • application development for seals, coatings, films and building components
  • modification and impregnation of plastics and natural materials
  • concepts of energy supply
  • energy analysis and measuring of the amounts of energy
  • waste water and grey water management and treatment for real estate
  • concepts for integrated water, waste and energy use
  • concepts for decentralized water use
  • testing of smoke extraction systems
