In the Mongolian steppe, 30 km to the south of the capital Ulaan Baatar, a city designed to become a global model of sustainable urban development is set to emerge between now and 2024: Maidar Eco City. It was awarded DGNB Platinum Pre-Certification in July 2015. It will be home to 300,000 people, with a gross floor space of almost 9 million square meters. The new metropolis is designed to draw around 50% of its power from renewable sources including a wind farm.
