In China and internationally, the steadily growing number of building projects causes a trend towards redensification of existing settlement structures. Increased requirements on security and indoor comfort in apartments and offices pose new challenges for the construction industry, just like the greater emphasis that is now placed on sustainability, conservation of natural resources and efficiency in the planning, construction and operating phases.
Since it is becoming more and more difficult to meet the growing set of demands for construction projects with traditional planning methods, new IT-supported processes have been in intensive development and testing for several years. These all fall under the category of building information modeling (BIM). BIM methods rely on seamless business processes across companies and media for planning, implementing and managing construction projects using open, vendor-neutral e-business standards. The objective is to have highly networked intercompany teams developing three-dimensional, object-oriented, computer-aided plans for drafting and execution. This will allow significant increases in efficiency and quality along the entire value chain, particularly for the many small and medium-sized businesses in the German construction and real estate industry.
